The Mizoram government has yet to appoint the chairperson and members for the newly established State Human Rights Commission (SHRC), despite nearly two months having passed since the panel’s formation. A senior official confirmed that the selection committee, headed by Chief Minister Lalduhoma, has not finalized its recommendations for the chairperson, two members, and 13 supporting staff for the SHRC.

Vanlalmawia, the Home Department Secretary, stated that the recruitment process is underway, with the committee expected to submit its recommendations shortly. The formation of the SHRC follows a directive from the Gauhati High Court, which had set a deadline for the Mizoram government to establish the commission and warned of contempt proceedings if it was not done in time.

In a previous court hearing, government advocate H Lalmalsawmi confirmed that the SHRC headquarters is in Aizawl and that the creation of 16 posts, including those for the chairperson and two members, had been completed. The appointment of suitable candidates and securing a building for the commission are still in progress.
