Government Seeks Support Amid Rising Concerns
The Central Government has asked civil society groups in Mizoram to support its plan to fence the India-Myanmar border and end the Free Movement Regime (FMR). This move comes as many residents and local leaders express worry about its cultural and humanitarian effects.
Meeting Held With Key Mizo Organisations
Recently, Union Home Secretary Govind Mohan met representatives from five major Mizoram organisations. These included the Central Young Mizo Association (CYMA) and Mizo Zirlai Pawl (MZP). The meeting, held in New Delhi, focused on gaining local support for the fencing project.
Civil Society Voices Opposition
During the meeting, Mizo leaders raised their concerns. They said that ending the FMR and building fences could harm traditional ties with the Chin community in Myanmar. These communities have shared cultural and family bonds for generations.
Centre Promises Support for Drug Control
In response, the Home Secretary assured the groups that the Centre would act carefully. He also promised support for anti-drug efforts in Mizoram. The government will provide funding through the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) to fight drug trafficking. This is important because Mizoram has become a major transit point for illegal drugs from the Golden Triangle region of Myanmar.
Humanitarian Issues Remain a Major Concern
Many civil society groups and political leaders believe that fencing the border could worsen the refugee crisis. Since the 2021 military coup in Myanmar, hundreds of refugees have crossed into Mizoram. Ending the FMR could make it harder for them to seek safety and reunite with family.
Finding a Balanced Solution
While the Centre aims to improve national security, it must also protect cultural identity and human rights. A balanced solution is needed—one that secures the border but also respects the unique ties between border communities.
