Mizoram Tops the List with 98.2% Literacy
In a major boost to India’s educational progress, five states from the Northeast region have secured spots in the top 10 most literate states in the country, according to the latest Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS) 2023–24.
Mizoram leads the way with an impressive literacy rate of 98.2%, officially becoming India’s first fully literate state. The announcement was made by Chief Minister Lalduhoma at Mizoram University, following a successful campaign under the ULLAS (Understanding Lifelong Learning for All in Society) program. Over 1,600 adults were educated through volunteer-driven initiatives.
Top Performing Northeastern States in Literacy
Here’s how other northeastern states ranked:
- Nagaland: 3rd place with 95.7% literacy
- Meghalaya: 5th place with 94.2% literacy
- Tripura: Tied at 6th with Chandigarh at 93.7%
- Manipur: 10th place with 92% literacy
This remarkable performance highlights the Northeast’s leadership in education and reflects years of consistent efforts in improving access to learning and adult education.
States Still Struggling with Low Literacy Rates
While the Northeast shows strong progress, some states continue to face challenges:
- Andhra Pradesh: 72.6% literacy
- Bihar: 74.3% literacy
- Madhya Pradesh: 75.2% literacy
These gaps highlight the need for focused education policies and outreach programs to ensure inclusive growth in literacy across India.
Conclusion
The literacy success of Mizoram and other northeastern states serves as a model for the rest of the country. With continued support for initiatives like ULLAS, India can move closer to achieving universal literacy and empower more citizens through quality education.
