Apex Student Body Raises Concerns

Aizawl, Mizoram – The Mizo Zirlai Pawl (MZP), Mizoram’s apex student body, has urged the state government to enhance security and tighten vigilance along the Assam-Mizoram border. The move aims to prevent a potential influx of non-tribals into Mizoram, an MZP leader said on Wednesday.

Recent Incident Sparks Alarm

The appeal follows an incident at the Vairengte check gate, where a large number of non-tribals, including some Bangladeshi immigrants, attempted to enter Mizoram. The individuals reportedly became agitated after a prolonged wait for Inner Line Permits (ILPs) on Monday night.

MZP President H. Lalthianghlima stated that the episode raised concerns that people are attempting to enter Mizoram following the eviction drive in Assam targeting illegal immigrants.

Call for Additional Security Measures

The student body has requested the deployment of extra police and security personnel along the inter-state border to prevent illegal entries.

A senior police officer noted that the recent surge in visitors from Assam may also be related to a recruitment rally at the Assam Rifles battalion headquarters in Zokhawsang, Aizawl, for the Central Armed Police Force.

Inner Line Permit (ILP) Statistics

According to Lalthianghlima, a total of 2,573 ILPs were issued in August, including 544 permits on August 18 alone. The average daily issuance of 140 ILPs has made the sudden spike a matter of concern.

He emphasized that Mizoram could face an influx of illegal Bangladeshi immigrants due to Assam’s ongoing crackdown.

Warnings and Cooperation

The MZP has issued a stern warning to any Bangladeshi immigrants entering Mizoram illegally, stating that the organisation will not be responsible for any incidents involving them.

The student body has also encouraged non-tribal residents to report any suspected illegal immigrants in their localities. Additionally, the MZP has pledged to assist law enforcement agencies in monitoring and controlling entries to ensure compliance with the ILP system.

Conclusion

The MZP’s move highlights the importance of border vigilance and proactive security measures in Mizoram. By strengthening surveillance and cooperating with authorities, the state aims to maintain law and order and prevent any illegal influx from neighboring Assam.
