The Mizoram government has launched an ambitious initiative to expand sports coaching and talent development across the state. The program aims to train young athletes for national and international competitions, with a long-term goal of preparing them for the 2036 Olympics.
Empowering Mizoram Sports (EMS) Programme Inaugurated
State Home Minister K. Sapdanga inaugurated the Empowering Mizoram Sports (EMS) programme under the ‘Bana Kaih’ handholding scheme.
The initiative marks a major step toward structured grassroots sports development, focusing on early talent identification and long-term athlete growth.
Youth Coaching and Talent Nurturing
-
Target age group: 8 to 15 years
-
Training duration: 15 days
-
Number of sports disciplines: 24, with emphasis on Olympic potential events
The program will provide basic coaching, helping children develop foundational skills and discover their sports strengths at an early age.
Public-Private Partnership Model
The EMS scheme will operate through a public-private partnership (PPP) model, ensuring shared responsibility between the government and community stakeholders. This approach is expected to provide better infrastructure, expert coaching, and wider opportunities for young athletes.
Focus on Olympic Success and Medal Prospects
Officials emphasized that priority will be given to sports where Mizoram shows strong medal potential or international visibility.
Sapdanga called the program a “milestone” for the state, stating it will give talented Mizo youth exposure, training, and the platform to excel globally.
The initiative reflects Mizoram’s commitment to building a robust sporting ecosystem and promoting the next generation of Olympic athletes from the region.
