Severe Disruptions Across the Hill State

Heavy snowfall and rain in Himachal Pradesh have led to the closure of more than 1,250 roads, causing significant disruption to daily life across the state. Despite the challenging conditions, tourists continue to visit snow-bound destinations, eager to enjoy the scenic winter landscapes.

Public Works Department (PWD) Minister Vikramaditya Singh confirmed that government teams are working round the clock to restore road connectivity.

“Two days ago, over 1,250 roads were closed across the state. Efforts are underway to reopen them, with snow blowers and JCB machines deployed at multiple locations,” Singh said.

Snowfall Brings Relief and Challenges

While the snowfall has caused inconvenience, it has also brought much-needed relief after a long dry spell. Minister Singh noted that the rain and snow will benefit upcoming crops, particularly in hilly areas, and help recharge water sources while maintaining soil moisture, which is vital for orchards.

He added that around 3,500 machines have been deployed statewide, with additional resources ready if required. Authorities are committed to reopening roads as soon as possible.

Tourists Stranded but Enjoying Winter

Despite road closures and traffic snarls, tourists are making the most of the snowfall.

Daniyal, a visitor from Delhi, said:

“We faced many difficulties due to traffic and snow. The Meteorological Department issued a two-day alert, so we are deciding whether to extend our stay. Despite challenges, we are enjoying the snow.”

Another tourist, Taiyiba, added:

“We had trouble accessing basic amenities yesterday. Roads are slippery and traffic is heavy, but we are enjoying our time. The snowfall is beautiful, and we are making the most of it.”

Authorities Urge Caution

Officials have advised locals and tourists to remain cautious, follow government advisories, and avoid unnecessary travel, as adverse weather conditions are expected to continue in the coming days.

Minister Singh also emphasized the importance of responsible tourism:

“Tourists are vital for the economy. Himachal is Devbhoomi and follows ‘Atithi Devo Bhava’. Visitors should ensure their activities respect the culture, heritage, and religious sentiments of the state.”
