Mizoram University launched a two-day national workshop today. The focus is on using artificial intelligence (AI) to improve financial access in tribal and remote areas.

Organizers and Purpose

The event is organized by the Department of Science and Technology (DST), Mizoram University, and the Innovation and Bio-Inspired Technology Foundation (IBITF) at IIT Bhilai. It brings together researchers, government leaders, and industry experts to explore how AI can support digital finance in the Northeast.

Governor Inaugurates Event

The Governor of Mizoram, who also serves as Chief Rector of the university, inaugurated the workshop. He launched a booklet featuring entrepreneurship support projects under DST’s Tribal Area Sub Plan Scheme.

AI Projects Driving Change

There are 11 active AI projects in Mizoram. Six are running at Mizoram University, and five at NIT Mizoram. IIT Bhilai provides support for these projects. These are part of 36 AI-led initiatives across the Northeast, focusing on financial inclusion.

The Governor explained that AI can solve the problem of limited financial services in remote areas. He said AI tools can create jobs and support local startups.

Key Project in Transport

One standout project from NIT Mizoram is the Economic Optimisation Platform for the state’s public transport system. It includes a mobile app that helps users book taxis and auto-rickshaws. This app is being developed with the support of the Transport Department to improve transport access across Mizoram.

Tech Innovation Hub Launched

The National Mission on Interdisciplinary Cyber-Physical Systems (NM-ICPS) helped establish a Technology Innovation Hub (TIH) at IIT Bhilai. This hub now supports various AI and fintech projects in the region.

Speakers at the event included:

  • Prof. Ajoy Kumar Khan (Workshop Coordinator)
  • Dibakar Chandra Deka (Vice Chancellor, MZU)
  • Amit Sharma (ICT Secretary)
  • Lalrammawia (Transport Director)
