In a major step toward digital inclusion, the Government of Mizoram has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with BHASHINI, an initiative under Digital India, to implement AI-based multilingual digital governance across the state.

The agreement aims to integrate BHASHINI’s advanced language technology platform into Mizoram’s digital systems. This will allow state departments to offer government services, public information, and welfare schemes in the Mizo language and other regional dialects—ensuring inclusive and accessible e-governance for all.

MoU Signed in New Delhi

The MoU was officially signed at the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) office in New Delhi. Present at the event were:

  • Khilli Ram Meena, Chief Secretary of Mizoram
  • Abhishek Singh, Additional Secretary at MeitY
  • Amit Sharma, ICT Secretary of Mizoram
  • Amitabh Nag, CEO of Digital India BHASHINI

Making Digital Services Language-Friendly

Mizoram Chief Secretary Khilli Ram Meena said,

“This collaboration with BHASHINI will help bring digital services to every Mizo citizen in their own language. We are blending tradition with technology to create a truly inclusive digital future.”

Abhishek Singh emphasized the national impact:

“This move supports the vision of multilingual governance and empowers every Indian, regardless of their native language, to access digital services.”

AI Tools for Better Governance

Mizoram ICT Secretary Amit Sharma highlighted the role of culturally sensitive technology in tribal regions, adding that the initiative would transform public service delivery using AI-powered translation and language tools.

Amitabh Nag, CEO of BHASHINI, noted:

“This is more than tech integration—it’s a co-creation effort to ensure governance speaks the people’s language.”

What’s Next?

As part of the partnership:

  • AI models for the Mizo language will be improved.
  • Translation datasets and tools suited for India’s multilingual diversity will be developed.
  • A BHASHINI Rajyam workshop will be organized soon in Aizawl to train government staff and build capacity for large-scale implementation.

Conclusion:

The Mizoram-BHASHINI MoU marks a significant push toward inclusive digital governance using AI and language technology. With this move, Mizoram aims to empower citizens in their native language, bridging the gap between policy and people.
